History

On April 2, 1902, construction commenced on our school building. On Labor Day of 1903, the school was officially blessed by the Bishop of Brooklyn and was named St. Alphonsus School, in honor of the founder of the Redemptorists.

Classes began in September of 1903 with 449 students and Sister Geraldine as the first principal. Reverend Mother Mary Louis, Superior of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood, sent other sisters to reinforce the community. By 1910, the enrollment had jumped to 1,204.

In 1917, Bishop McDonnell granted the request of the pastor, Father James Barron, to change the name to Our Lady of Perpetual Help School.

In 2016, we became known as Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Academy of Brooklyn. We are supported by the Parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in the Sunset Park Community.
